Tofukuji Temple Garden, Kyoto

Tofukuji Temple gardens were created in 1939. The author is famous painter, a master of tea ceremony, researcher of gardens and master of landscape art Mirei Shigemori. In the courtyard of the Temple there are four gardens, each one has its own idea. In the southern garden you can see four stone compositions, symbolizing the sacred island Horai, and the five hills covered by moss, the symbols of the "five mountains". The western and northern gardens are made in the spirit of modernism. The squares of clipped azaleas and white gravel create checkerboard pattern in the western garden. In the northern garden this role is played by stone slabs and moss. East Garden is the smallest among them. Here the white gravel represents the sea, and seven stone columns are a reflection of the constellation Ursa Major.
